G.F. Handel (1685-1759): Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day
Saint Cecilia, whose feast day we celebrate on 22 November, is the patron saint of music and musicians. John Dryden wrote a beautiful text, which Handel set to music in 1739. In this piece, the power of music is brilliantly described and sung about, and numerous instruments pass by to underline this with their own sounds together with soloists and choir.
About the CVE
In 1981, Ruud Huijbregts founded the Eindhovens Vocaal Ensemble, now called Collegium Vocale Eindhoven. Under his direction, the choir performed many major choral works, including Bach’s St. John’s and St. Matthew’s Passion, Magnificat and Hohe Messe, Monteverdi’s Marian Vespers, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C minor, and Haydn’s great masses. In addition, works by contemporary composers such as Kodaly, Britten, Toebosch, Maessen, Manneke and Pärt. In 2020, the CVE performed the world premiere of Planctus Cygni by Gerard Beljon during November Music in ‘s Hertogenbosch.
About the NBO
The Netherlands Accompaniment Orchestra has been providing choral accompaniment for more than thirty years. The orchestra was founded in Arnhem and has acquired an indispensable place on Dutch concert stages. It has dedicated itself to accompanying choirs and soloists in the beautiful music written for that purpose. The repertoire covers the entire history of music, from Bach, Handel, Mozart and Haydn to Symanowski, Weill and Orf.
In addition to the Netherlands Accompaniment Orchestra, there is also the NBO415, consisting of musicians who specialize in authentic performance practice and therefore also play on original instruments.
