Program
Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day HWV 76
G.F. Handel (1685-1759)
Saint Cecilia, whose feast day we celebrate on November 22, is the patron saint of music and musicians. John Dryden wrote a beautiful text, which Handel set to music in 1739. This piece brilliantly describes and celebrates the power of music, featuring numerous instruments that underscore this with their unique sounds, along with soloists and the choir.
About the CVE
In 1981, Ruud Huijbregts founded the Eindhoven Vocal Ensemble, now called Collegium Vocale Eindhoven. Under his direction, the choir performed many major choral works, including Bach’s St. John and St. Matthew Passions, the Magnificat and Hohe Messe, Monteverdi’s Vespers, Mozart’s Requiem and C minor Mass, and Haydn’s great masses. The orchestra also performs works by contemporary composers such as Kodaly, Britten, Toebosch, Maessen, Manneke, and Pärt. In 2020, the CVE performed the world premiere of Gerard Beljon’s Planctus Cygni during November Music in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
About the NBO
The Netherlands Accompanying Orchestra has been providing choral accompaniment for over thirty years. Founded in Arnhem, the orchestra has earned an undeniable place on Dutch concert stages. It specializes in accompanying choirs and soloists in the beautiful music written for them. Its repertoire spans the entire history of music, from Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Haydn to Symanowski, Weill, and Orf.
In addition to the Netherlands Accompanying Orchestra, there is also the NBO415, composed of musicians who specialize in authentic performance practice and therefore also play on original instruments.
