Renaissance composer William Byrd wrote only three masses; not surprising, because Latin masses were no longer allowed to be used in the English church, after the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church. In his day this was even politically sensitive. Apparently his employer, none other than Queen Elizabeth I herself, turned a blind eye to the use of the old liturgical language. Or maybe she didn’t know about it? Exactly four centuries after Byrd’s death, religious diversity is highly valued: the Gloria from one of his masses was also sung during the coronation of King Charles.
The Laurens Collegium performs that mass almost in its entirety. The choir replaces parts of the mass with Lutheran hymns, set by Max Reger. This year marks the 150th birthday of this late romantic composer. That is why organist Hayo Boerema plays his grand Fantasy and fugue about the name Bach. As an introduction and conclusion, you will also hear toccatas by two other jubilees this year: the Tanz-Toccata by the Austrian Anton Heiller and the Toccata by the Belgian Joseph Jongen. Their catchy rhythms and ditto melodies immediately put you in a sunny mood.
